The Forge
The blacksmith was an important man on the estate. Both
he and his team of apprentice farrier’s were kept busy
shoeing horses and mending the machinery that was used in
the CornMill itself.
The Cornmill
The mill obtained its power from an overshot waterwheel that was
feed by a tributary of the Kells Water River. When the sluice gates
were opened the huge French Burr millstones would grind the grains
as a team of millers and their apprentices would tend to the
machinery.
Mill Race Cottages
The Mill Race cottages were reserved for important families on the
estate such as the head gardener, the farm manager and senior
members of the household staff.
The Manor Houses
The CornMill Country Estate is unique for many reasons - not least because it
has not one but two grand georgian manor houses. Designed in perfect
symmetry and aligned to perfectly mirror one another they were originally
constructed individually for the Lord and Lady of the estate respectively. In an
era of sophistication and romance this would have been seen as the ultimate
statement of opulence and grandeur.
