The Gate Lodges
The twin black stone gate lodges stand as bastions guarding
the entrance to the heart of the estate. They were
traditionally reserved for important members of the estate
household like the butler and estate manager. In later years
they had an administrative use recording the comings and
goings of deliveries to and from the mill.
The Game Lodge
The game lodge was used frequently throughout the shooting and
hunting seasons with many of the local estates taking turns to host
annual shooting events. Pheasant, red-legged partridge and
woodcock were the normal quarry. Not simply a sporting activity
shooting also provided fresh meat to be shared on the estates tables.
The Parlour Houses
The parlour houses, overseen by the estates head cook, were
typically used to store food and dry goods. Spices and assorted
delicacies from around the world were greatly prized and would
have been collected to be stored and used on special occasions.
As fond entertainers the landlords often threw lavish parties for
visiting gentry in the manor house's grand ball room.
